The original lyrics for the song were about a totalitarian society that made everyone wear their sunglasses at night; however under pressure from Hart’s record company to make something more marketable, the song was altered to be more “romantic”.

The video, however, reflects the original vision of a police state, with scenes of Hart, sans-sunglasses, being strong-armed by police officers and paraded past various citizens wearing their regulation shades. Near the end of the video, Hart is brought to the office of a female police officer, played by Laurie Brown, who later became the host of The NewMusic as well as a VJ on MuchMusic.

Released in May of 1984, this was the second single from the Rebel Yell album. It was very successful and reached a high of #4 on the Billboard Charts becoming Idol’s first Top 10 hit in the U.S.

In the liner notes for the Expanded Edition of Rebel Yell, Billy Idol notes that this song was one of the first three written for the album (the other two being the title track and “(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows.” The original track was recorded in Studio A at Electric Lady Studios in New York, with a Linn drum machine and the bass parts played by Steve Webster.

The song is notable for the female voice of Perri Lister that sings ‘Les yeux sans visage’ (French for ‘eyes without a face’) as a background chorus.

Reportedly filmed in a marathon 30-hour session, the video was released in June 1984 and subsequently nominated for MTV Video Music Awards for ‘Best Editing’ and ‘Best Cinematography’.

The track is similar in musical style to past Eurythmics singles and its melancholy lyrics draw a comparison between the painful and tragic feelings of unrequited love with falling rain. Notably, the group adorned the recording with the composition and arrangement skills of Michael Kamen, resulting in more natural feel to the overall finished product (versus the heavily synthetic aeshtetic of the Sweet Dreams album and its singles). The music video featured Lennox and Stewart in a shore house possibly on Hoy in the Orkney Islands, with Lennox walking along the rocky shore and cliff top in a nightgown, holding a lantern. In many scenes the two are filmed separately, then superimposed into the same frame. The result is that the viewer may perceive one as being a ghost in the world of the other.

During Eurythmics reunion “Peacetour” they performed an in-studio concert for the A&E Network in the U.S. Dave Stewart revealed that the lyrics to the song came into being after an argument between himself and Lennox while they were doing some songwriting in New York City’s Columbus Hotel. The basic melody had already been written and Lennox looked out the window after their fight and noticed it was starting to rain. She announced, “Here comes the rain again.”

“Here Comes the Rain Again”’s running time is about five minutes long and was edited on the Touch album (fading out at approximately four-and-a-half minutes). Although it was edited even further for its single and video release, many U.S. radio stations played the full-length version of it. The entire five-minute version did not appear on any Eurythmics album until Greatest Hits in 1991.

The line ‘Walk with me, like lovers do, talk to me, like lovers do’ from “Here Comes the Rain Again” also features on Platinum Weird’s track ‘Taking Chances’; made famous by a Celine Dion cover version in late 2007. Stewart co-wrote that song, too.

The style of music, including the doo-wop beat, the close harmonies and Joel’s frequent use of falsetto singing, is reminiscent of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (as the song is meant to be Joel’s response to the Four Seasons song “Rag Doll”); the verse melody bears some resemblance to Ravel’s “Boléro”. The song also has the uncommon feature of changing key from the original two times before giving back, for a total of three keys.

The title character in the music video was played by Joel’s girlfriend (later wife) Christie Brinkley, who was the inspiration for the song in real life. They divorced in 1994 and subsequently the song was missing from the setlist during Joel’s 1994 “River of Dreams” tour.

When Billy Joel decided to have Christie Brinkley in the video, she showed up at his house to discuss it. He answered the door and immediately told her “I don’t dance”, which was true at the time. Brinkley had to give Joel basic dance steps so he could “dance” in the video with her. This started their romance which eventually led to their marriage.

The song is about Keagy’s little sister, Christy. Keagy wrote the song at his apartment, near Divisadero and California streets in San Francisco, after he had just returned from a visit to his hometown in rural Eugene, Oregon. He had been struck at how fast his teenage sister, 10 years younger than him, was growing up.

“After we started playing it a lot, Jack turned to me and said, ‘What exactly are you saying?’ ” Keagy recalled. “He thought the words were Sister Christian, instead of Sister Christy, so it just stuck.” He added that the real Christy was so mortified when the song came out she nearly changed her name
